Our History

Before there was an organized league in Sandwich, only two teams existed every summer, for the most part. There was the town team, which had gone by various names over the decades, but most people remember them as the Sandwich Cardinals. These were guys mostly in their early 20's and mid to late 30's who played competitively against other local town teams like Plano, Yorkville, Somonauk and Earlville, to name a few. It wasn't out of the question that some major league pitchers from Chicago (both the Cubs and Sox) who didn't make the post-season, were easily swayed to come out to these parts and pitch for local teams late in their season who were willing to pay a "fee" for their services.
The only other local team, prior to what became known as Sandwich Boys Baseball, was a 9-10 year old traveling team in what was called (and probably today still is called) The Corn Belt League.
But, following the end of WWII in 1945, the baby boom was in full force. And by 1954, many a parent discovered that if their nine or ten-year-old boy wasn't good enough to make the Corn Belt Team locally, then their summer would be spent playing pick up games around town. In March of 1954 it was announced in the Sandwich Free Press newspaper, that there was to be a local baseball league formed, serving boys ages 9 thru 12, to be called Sandwich Boys Baseball. The very first games were played on June 7th, 1954 and from that point forward Sandwich added on both younger and older levels of baseball that today represent Rookie, Minor, City and Pony ball. At one time, starting in 1954, there was even an American Legion team that played for several decades in Sandwich as well.
There were girls who played in Sandwich Boys Baseball going back to the early 1990's, and eventually, in the 21st Century, the organization wisely changed its name to the Sandwich Baseball Association. 70 years-plus, this organization continues to teach and educate players at all levels of baseball, continuing a tradition that was born of the need to serve all who wished to play baseball in Sandwich.
